Great Games since 2000
Mustangs 2 Ridgewood 1 - 24 innings - 2004
The Mustangs travelled to face Suburban Prairie foe Ridgewood on Friday, May 18th as part of a three game series. Eddie Lambrecht started for the Mustangs on the mound and worked through three quick innings. The Mustangs solid play forced Ridgewood to bring in their ace, Arizona State bound Joe Labek to start the fourth. Labek held down the Mustangs through the next nine innings until the game was halted because of darkness. Labek's strike out total was climbing at a remarkable pace. Lambrecht was equally affective until he was taken out after the 9th inning because of a high pitch count with the score still 0 - 0. Dan Neal pitched the final three innings that day to force the game to be continued until next week. Nobody could figure what would happen one week later on Friday the 25th. The teams played for twelve more innings with each team scoring in the 14th to make the score 1-1. Labek and Lambrecht, who re-entered on the mound for Neal, were unbelievable retiring batter after batter. Lambrecht and Neal combined to strike out 24 Ridgewood batters in the epic battle. Labek finished with an IHSA and National single game record of 40 strike outs. Kevin Corley ended up being the hero when he turned around a Labek fastball for a double down the left field line to score Jim Doherty from second base with the go ahead run in the top of the 24th. Lambrecht pitched a scoreless bottom of the 24th for the victory in what ended as the longest game in Illinois high school history.
Mustangs 5 Marist 4 - 2008
Behind the strong pitching of junior Jon Gurrister your Mustangs knocked off local private school power Marist for the first time in the school's history. Gurrister used an overpowering fastball to get in on the hands of the Red Hawk hitters while working away with a 12 to 6 curveball to keep them off balance. Robbie Fioravanti had the big hit with a 2 run double to plate the tying and go ahead runs in the bottom of the sixth inning giving the Mustangs 4 to 3 lead. The Mustangs scored one more crucial insurance run on a Red Hawk error to head into the top of the 7th with a 2 run lead. The Mustangs bent but did not break allowing one run to preserve an historic 5-4 victory.
Mustangs 4 Sycamore 3 - 9 innings - 2002
The Mustangs awoke to a raining Saturday morning in Evergreen Park and news their home game would be moved 2 hours away to Sycamore High School. Despite the long ride the Mustangs showed great intestinal fortitude by playing a back and forth game. Dan Hollingsed worked all nine innings shutting down Suburban Prairie front runner Sycamore much of the day. The crafty lefty mixed up his pitches beautifully keeping their hitters off balance. The Mustangs tied the game in the bottom of the 7th after Sycamore had gone ahead on an unearned run in the top half of the inning. After a scoreless 8th, Sycamore went ahead for the second time on a two out home run to take a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the 9th. That set the stage for some Luke Schillo heroics. Mark Sizemore singled with two outs to keep the Mustangs alive and give Luke a chance to do something special. Luke hit a towering fly ball down the leftfield line that was reminiscent of Carlton Fisk's home run in the World Series years ago. The only question was whether it would stay fair or not. The umpire's home run signal sent the Mustang bench storming onto the field to mob Schillo at home plate in a jubilant celebration.
